For training and safe travel in avalanche terrain

...for a course

Your course provider will supply a list of equipment that you need to complete your training course and indicate if you can borrow or hire avalanche safety equipment.

...for travel in avalanche terrain

We do not have a single recommendation for a transceiver, shovel or probe, it depends on the anticipated use.  But we do recommend practice of searches and rescue scenarios to improve efficiency and effectiveness with the essential safety equipment.  Your instructor will be pleased to discuss the strengths and limitations of different avalanche products.

...for snow study

Basic equipment is usually provided by your instructor.  But to get the most from your snow profiles you will need:

  • Thermometer (low cost fridge thermometer is fine)

  • 2m tape measure or ruler

  • Clinometer (or a simple protractor)

  • Magnifying glass (x8 or x10 is best)

  • Crystal screen (or a piece of stiff plastic)

  • A snow saw (or simple branch saw) can be useful for cutting blocks, especially in hard snow

  • Something to take notes with ('wet notes' are useful)
