'Caution - Avalanches!' by the Swiss Avalanche Institute (SLF) is one of the best summaries of the key knowledge to understand avalanches (also available in French and German from the SLF website).

'Great White Fright' published in the BMC's Summit magazine is a good overview summary of the key knowledge for safe travel in avalanche terrain.
